Recently, someone came to my website after searching for the following phrase:
why is disgust spelled with a g
The search sent them to my article on the Difference between discusting and disgusting, but I thought it’d be a good question to answer in its own post.
Disgust derives from the Middle French word desgouster, which meant something similar to distaste. The Middle French word goust meant taste and was the predecessor of today’s French word for taste: goût.
So, that answers the question, but why did the searcher ask the question in the first place? Well, the hard G in disgust sounds eerily similar to a hard C, which is probably why discusting is such a popular misspelling of disgusting.
