One of the great benefits of Facebook is being able to keep tabs on what your friends and family are up to. This is particularly helpful if you are separated by long distances and see each other infrequently.
When I graduated from high school nearly 25 years ago, no one had email and certainly social media didn’t exist. If someone moved without telling you their new address or phone number, you likely never talked to them again.
Facebook changed all that.
Today, I can keep in touch with childhood friends, high school classmates, cousins, and others who are important to me. I can watch their families grow and take part in the adventures by proxy.
But every so often, someone shares something offensive that I no longer want to see on my News Feed. I don’t want to remove them as a friend. (Actually, in the 9 years I’ve been on Facebook, I’ve never removed someone from my friends list.) I assume you have felt the same way as well.
You’re in luck. There’s a way to stop their content from popping up on your News Feed but to still allow you and they to interact with one another’s content and to communicate with each other.
Just unfollow the person.
There are actually 2 ways to unfollow someone on Facebook: from your News Feed and from their Timeline.
From your News Feed, click on the the drop down menu icon in the top right corner of a post your friend shared. Then click on “Unfollow [friend]”.
From their timeline, click on the “Following” button on their cover photo, then select “Unfollow [friend]” at the bottom of the drop down menu.
It’s that easy.
The best part is that they will have no idea, so you can avoid potential defriending drama. It’s like the polite way to defriend.
