Want more blog traffic: be an expert

Want more blog traffic: be an expert

This summer marks 12 years that I’ve been blogging. I’ve learned a few tricks along the way to generate traffic and create awareness of old content. Here’s one particular trick I like to use:

When I write, I speak as an expert.

I know I’m not the only writing expert or social media expert out there. There are tens of thousands of writers, editors, and social media managers, and many of them have much larger followings than I do. Many of them teach and have written books, things I’ve yet to do.

That being said, I know people turn to me for expertise and knowledge. For years, I’ve receive questions from friends and families about grammar and writing, and that same tendency has spilled over into social media. But it’s not just people who know me well; I regular receive questions from strangers on grammar issues. Sometimes, I’m even asked to settle a bet. :)

Because I know people turn to me for advice (even if my following is low compared to other professionals), I present them with professional advice. I always write with the thought in mind that what I say will be used by someone to help them write or manage social media. Doing so helps me focus on how I present the advice and tips.

Plus, when I come up in a search engine, it’s usually because people want their question answered; I have to provide that answer.

Speaking as an expert when you blog will eventually position you as an expert, especially if what you share is factual and helpful.
