Difference between complement and compliment

I fixed an error in a client’s document recently. They had written compliment when the context of the sentence seemed to indicate complement. It was a perfect topic for another difference between post.

Compliment is a remark that says something positive about someone or something. Complement, on the other hand, refers to something that helps to complete something else.

Examples:

  • Telling me I am handsome is a compliment.
  • Hot peppers are a good complement to great nachos.
