Spruce Maps

I’ve been published on ALA!

A very exciting time. I should point out that the article was originally written last summer, and I have learned a few things since then. Nevertheless, here is Spruced-Up Site Maps (or “Spruce Maps” as ALA cleverly named the URL) in all its glory.

Looks like I got in in the nick of time as well.

ALA is not accepting new articles at this time.

  1. Nice article and nice styling on the site map. Do you create the site map manually or is it generated dynamically? I recently took a course from Rudy Limeback and he showed me a hierarchical database structure that can be used to generate navbars, sitemaps, and bread crumbs (all from the same table, just queried differently).

Curious as to why you use inline JS on the drop down menus instead of what I call “remote scripting”.

  2. The sitemap is created manually. I’ve used FP2K and DWMX to create them dynamically, but the code was convoluted, so I did it myself. Th site isn’t indexed into a database at all, so I am not sure if there are any dynamic choices available to me.

The reason I use inline scripting on the menus is because the code is two years old. We are in the process of redeveloping the site and are considering the submenus as something that needs to be streamlined. Actually, if you say what the menus looked like before 2003, you’d be very pleased with how they are created now. :)
